Remei is the founder and owner of Remei India Ltd. and of Remei Tanzania, the organic-farming businesses in India and Tanzania, which work with around 3000 smallholders in India (Madhya Pradesh) and around 2000 smallholders in Tanzania (Meatu and Maswa District) in a participatory way to produce organic cotton.
With the purchase guarantee to the farmers Remei takes on the risk of market access for this organic cotton. By paying an additional premium above the market price Remei gives the farmers a share in the value added and room for development.
With this trustworthy source of raw material and the two organic-farming businesses we set the starting point for Remei’s unique textile production chain. Both businesses have been certified in agreement with EU Regulation 834 / 2007 and are audited under the bioRe® Sustainable Cotton Standard.
Organic farming
We stand for organic cotton production without the use of genetically modified seeds. Transparency therefore already starts with the controlled distribution of the seed by the organisations Remei India Ltd. and Remei Tanzania Ltd. to the farmers according to the area under cultivation.
The cotton farmers use only GMO-free seeds for cultivation and work their land in agreement with nature without chemical or synthetic pesticides. Instead, the farmers use beneficial animals and natural pesticides such as an extract of neem trees. In order to preserve soil fertility and biodiversity, and to prevent soil erosion, organic cotton is grown in crop rotation.
The smallholders contribute to the organic-farming businesses in a participatory manner and have access to coaching and training to continuously educate themselves in organic farming.
